Latest Samsung Galaxy 10.1 tablet

Following the launch of the Samsung Galaxy Tab with its 7-inch display late last year, Samsung has now announced the Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1, the newest member to the company’s tablet lineup. The device, as its name implies, was unveiled at Mobile World Congress with a 10.1-inch 1280 X 800 WXGA display and features Google’s Android 3.0 Honeycomb operating system, like the Motorola Xoom which was announced at the beginning of the year at CES.

The Galaxy Tab 10.1, however, is a little bit lighter than both the 9.7-inch iPad and the 10.1-inch Xoom at 1.3 pounds, compared to 1.5 and 1.6 pounds. The device will have a proprietary charging cable and no USB support.

Unlike the 7-inch Tab, the Galaxy Tab 10.1 will not be utilizing Samsung’s internal processor and will use an NVIDIA Tegra 2 dual-core 1.0 GHz CPU; the 7-inch Tab came with a single-core 1.0 GHz Hummingbird CPU that was made by Samsung based on ARM design.

Like the new Galaxy S II smartphones, also unveiled at MWC, the new Galaxy Tab 10.1 will feature both a front- and rear-facing camera. The rear camera has an 8-megapixel resolution with LED flash while the front camera is capable of 2-megapixel resolution, which would mostly be used for self-portraits and video calling.

Unlike the Galaxy S II smartphones, however, there was no mention that the Galaxy Tab 10.1 will utilize the same Super AMOLED Plus displays. In the past, while the Galaxy S smartphones made use of the company’s Super AMOLED screens, the original 7-inch Tab shipped with an LCD display.

The device supports WiFi a/b/g/n and also HSPA+ up to 21 Mbps, making it a 4G-capable device according to the marketing lingo employed by U.S. GSM carriers. However, to take advantage of the maximum theoretical download speeds, the carrier and network must be optimized to support it–in the U.S., T-Mobile USA can support up to 21 Mbps in 4G areas while AT&T’s HSPA+ network will be capped at 14.4 Mbps and the carrier is expected to migrate to LTE after.

Additionally, the device will be a Google Experience tablet, meaning that Samsung won’t pre-load its proprietary TouchWiz user interface on top of Android 3.0 Honeycomb, which was the first version of Android designed for tablets.

The tablet will start shipping in some markets in June for an undisclosed price. With the early summer release date, the tablet will probable debut after the iPad 2 and the Xoom, and will ship around the same time that Apple will begin pushing out the next-generation iPhone 5 if the company’s historical launch dates hold true.

Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1

As you can see from the gallery, both the 10.1 and the 8.9 look extremely similar, and boy are they thin. They measure just .33-inches thick, and as you can glean from this picture, they absolutely give the .34-inch iPad some real competition in terms of dimensions. The models we saw weren't final -- in fact, they didn't even power on -- but Samsung says the 10.1 will weigh 1.31 pounds and the 8.9 just 1.03 pounds. Both tablets have microSD slots, 3.5mm headphone jacks, and SIM slots, although there will be WiFi versions of both of them. The two tablets have the same array of cameras, which includes a 3 megapixel shooter with an LED flash on the back and a 2 megapixel lens on the front.

Internally, the Tabs will pack 1GHz dual-core processors. We're assuming it will be Tegra 2 since all the Honeycomb tablets thus far have used NVIDIA's silicon, but that's unconfirmed at this point. The 8.9 will be available with 16GB of storage and a 6000mAH battery, and the 10.1 will come in both 16GB and 32GB varieties and with a 6860mAH cell. Both are said to provide 10 hours of video playback. There are full specs of both of these in the press release below.

Latest Galaxy Tab 10.1 Tablet

There are tons and tons of Android based tablets out there, none of them are able to compete with the iPad. If you remember, the only Android based tablet that managed to compete with the iPad ( just barely though) was the Samsung Galaxy 7 inch Tab. Both these devices were launched in India, but the iPad won the global battle. Apple is looking at India as a serious tablet market, the quick launch of the iPad2 in India seems to suggest. Even though it was much later than the global launch, late last month Apple launched the successor to the original iPad, the iPad2 and is reportedly selling like hot cakes!

Now Samsung wants a piece of the tablet market in India and launching two new Android Honeycomb 3.0 based tablets in India. Honeycomb is Google’s first tablet optimised mobile OS. Ranjit Yadav, Country Head, Samsung Mobile and IT, Samsung India confirmed the tablets in a statement to the Business Standard, “We will launch the 10-inch tablet PC at around Rs 35,000 and the 8-inch device will be priced around Rs 28,000. While the tablet PC market today stands at around 25,000 units a quarter, we expect it to grow exponentially here on.”

While this statement does not confirm which models will bare these price tags, it does give us an approximate pricing on the devices, I’m guessing the 8.9 Tab wll be priced Rs. 28,000/- onwards and the 10.1 Tab will start from Rs. 35,000/- onwards. Samsung’s new Android based smartphone, Galaxy S 2 is expected to be released anytime this month. This shows the interest that Samsung has in the mobile computing market in India. While we wait for an official release date and the complete price sheet, here’s a look at the specifications of both these tablets.

ASUS Eee Pad Transformer

ASUS had to do something special at CES 2012 to trump its Transformer Prime, which was the first quad-core Android tablet, as it hit the market just weeks before the big show. It also had to meet the lofty expectations it set at CES 2011, where it introduced the Eee Pad Transformer and other tablets, firmly establishing itself in the Android tablet market.

So what did the Taiwanese device maker do? It introduced an even more powerful version of what was already the most powerful Android tablet, called it the Transformer Prime 700 series, and announced along with NVIDIA a $250, quad-core, Tegra 3-powered, seven-inch MeMO Android Ice Cream Sandwich tablet. To put that in perspective, if the Tegra 3 MeMO launched today, it would be the most powerful 7-inch tablet available, and trail only the new-and-improved Prime in the spec sheet, for the same cost of a budget Android tablet, and the popular Barnes & Noble NOOK Tablet.
Insanity

That’s insane – Tegra 3 performance at such a low cost, and maybe too good to be true, at least for the time being. Neither ASUS nor NVIDIA announced a release date, and ASUS did not have a working model to share with CES attendees. In addition, we are still waiting on the glasses-free 3D MeMO ASUS unveiled at Computex. After this CES, we doubt we will ever see that on the market. In fact, ASUS reps suggested the company decided to instead ply its efforts on the $250 Tegra 3 MeMO, though nothing official has been announced regarding the 3D model.

HP Slate 500 features

The HP Slate isn't a revolutionary device nor is it an iPad killer. It is nonetheless very evolutionary.
Pros
Wonderful inking experience
Native Windows application support
Good number of connections and ports
Strong video playback capabilities
Cons
Doesn't support a lot of touch optimized software
Low battery life compared to ARM based slates
Expensive compared to consumer slates
Poor viewing angles in primary landscape mode
HP Slate 500 User Full Review

As a tablet PC user since the launch of Windows XP Tablet PC Edition in November 2002, I've longed for a lightweight, portable and thin slate device that essentially functions as a digital notepad computer, and this is what I believe HP has delivered in the 500. There's nothing new here, the Slate is just a vanilla Windows 7 Professional device with practically no 3rd party applications installed except Evernote and the camera software, but I think that's actually a good thing as it keeps the unit from being bogged down given its adequate but less-than-powerful Atom platform.
HP Slate 500 Specifications
Genuine Windows 7 Professional
Slate tablet design starting at 1.50 lb/0.68 kg
8.9-inch diagonal LED-backlit WSVGA wide-viewing angle display (1024 x 600 or 1024 x 768 for some applications)
Capacitive multi-touch screen with pen digitizer
Integrated 802.11 b/g/n wireless LAN
Bluetooth 3.0 + HS
Intel System Controller Hub (SCH) US15W chipset and Intel Atom™ processor
64 GB SSD

Apple I Pod 2 Features

Review of Apple IPod
It's slick, thin, and fast. It's also the most complete tablet available thanks to the more than 60,000 available apps.
Pros
Slick, thin, and fast
Excellent battery life
Amazing app support
Cons
Good, not great, display
Subpar speaker
Lousy cameras
Apple iPad 2 Full Review

Apple made the iPad 2 thinner, lighter, and more powerful than the first-generation tablet. The iPad 2 also has front- and rear-facing cameras, which enable FaceTime video chat, and at least one high-profile launch app iPad 2 exclusive in iMovie.
While the iPad upgrades qualify as something more than a fresh coat of paint, the functional differences between the first generation iPad and iPad 2 are minimal. The iPad 2 is essentially the same device that reinvented the tablet market in 2010.
